Sport: Part of something bigger
Sport: Part of something bigger
Soldier on operations turned ONTHEGO Sales Rep, Kris Milne talks about his experience in a war torn country. He saw sport as a powerful tool overcoming differences and is now making an impact at ONTHEGO Sports through team wear.
MAKING AN IMPACT
“Sport is a universal language. At its best it can bring people together, no matter what their origin, background, religious beliefs or economic status.”
Some may ask themselves why I do what I do?
How could I possibly feel that I am making a difference every time I sell a piece of customised team wear? After all, I’m ‘just a sales rep’.
The answer is simple; I’m not selling team wear, I’m selling belief, unity, strength, empowerment and a myriad of other emotions with every garment sold. I can hear you scrolling your mouse upwards to close the page, but hear me out and you may understand why.
I was a soldier on operations, I was deployed to a war torn country where I thought nothing could possibly unify those around me. Except for a very strange Sunday afternoon (after church of course) when something amazing happened.
The town where we were embedded seemingly became calm and somewhat peaceful. Kind of like the feeling you get in a small country town before a game of football.
Whilst conducting our normal patrol we heard quite a commotion and kids running from left and right past us with the type of excitement you would never expect to see. Amazingly wide smiles.
When we rounded the corner we saw a volleyball net and two teams wearing clothes that had been donated by a previous rotation.
The strangest part of all this is that the males that were taking part in this event on the SAME TEAM were trying to destroy each other the day before. But the instant they put that uniform on they were unified.
Nothing else mattered in that moment.
They had the belief that when they wore that uniform, that beautiful piece of sublimated polyester that had been given away by a team who no longer had use for them a million miles away, that they were part of something bigger.
In a war torn country with violence everywhere and a country in peril the one thing that brought them together was a net, a ball and a uniform.
So to some it may seem like we sell sportswear, but to me it holds special significance. I have seen first-hand that it doesn’t matter where you come from or what beliefs you hold. That piece of polyester, cotton, lycra whatever it may be, brings people together.
It holds more than just the fabric of the garment, within those tiny woven pieces of material embedded deep down in the fibres are the foundations of unity and empowerment but most of all belief, strength and resilience.
There are no borders, once sports is involved it has the ability to build bridges and transcend the general cultural stereotypes. Somehow creating a counter-culture in a time where despair and peril reigned supreme.
That’s truly making an impact!
